Welcome to Class 1

In Class One there are the children in Year One and Year Two in the mornings and then in the afternoons the Reception children sometimes join them for some of the sessions.  During the mornings, the Reception children are still in the same classroom as Key Stage One, but spend their time as a Foundation Stage Unit with the Nursery children.

The Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which is play based and encourages the children to be independent and to develop creativity and think critically.  We aim to give all children a secure foundation in learning and aim for them to become confident, independent learners who are willing to take risks and embrace challenge.   They have a topic based approach to cover the key aspects of the Curriculum, but we are also very much focused on the needs and wants of the children, so will adapt our plans and cover topics that are of real interest to them.  Through the observations that are completed of the children and the ‘in the moment’ teaching we do, we are able to identify their strengths as well as the next steps of their learning.  With having a small number of children, we are proud to say we know the children very well.

The Reception children also have a daily Maths and Phonics session and are heard read at several times a week either one to one with an adult or as part of a group guided reading session.  They participate in weekly Physical Education sessions, sometimes with the Nursery children and at other times with Key Stage One.  Guided writing is very important and we start this as soon as the children are ready, with the aim of providing them with the skills and knowledge to write independently within the setting during their child imitated play.  Within the curriculum there is no requirement for them to have separate Religious Education sessions but we feel, being a Church of England school, we should share stories from the Bible, learn about the significant festivals and begin to explore the festivals of other religions.

The Year One and Year Two children (Key Stage One), follow the National Curriculum 2014.  They have a daily Phonics, English and Maths session and then in the afternoons have topic work, Physical Education, Religious Education, Personal, Social, Health and Emotion Education and Computing.  Like the Reception children, they will be heard read several times a week either one to one with an adult or as part of a guided reading.  We also frequently do paired reading and are encouraging children to have a love of reading.  The children have a positive attitude to learning, work hard, ask questions and have the confidence to ask for help.

We are fortunate in Class One to be able to offer serval different experts including a specialist music teacher and PE coaches.  This has a huge benefit to the children’s enjoyment of school and their learning experience.  They always look forward to and are very eager for the next session.
