Welcome to Class 1!
In Class One there are Year One and Year Two children in the mornings and then in the afternoons the Reception children join us for some of the sessions. During the mornings, the Reception children are still in the same classroom as Key Stage One, but spend their time as a Foundation Stage Unit with the Nursery children.
The Reception children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which is play based and encourages the children to be independent and to develop creativity and think critically. They have a topic based approach to cover the key aspects of the curriculum but we are also very much focused on the needs and wants of the children, so will swiftly adapt our plans and cover topics that are of real interest to them. Through the observations that are completed of the children, we are able to identify their strengths and then the next steps of their learning. With having a small number of children we are proud to say we know the children very well and so we able to move them forward and support their next steps of learning quickly.
The Reception children also have a daily Maths and Phonics session and are heard read at least three times a week either one to one with an adult or as part of a group guided reading session. They participate in at least two Physical Education sessions a week, sometimes with the Nursery children and at other times with Key Stage One. Guided writing is very important and we start this as soon as the children are ready, with the aim of providing them with the skills and knowledge to write independently within the setting during their child imitated play. Within the curriculum there is no requirement for them to have Religious Education sessions but we feel, being a Church school, we should share stories from the Bible, learn about the significant festivals and begin to explore the festivals of other religions.
The Year One and Year Two children (Key Stage One), follow the National Curriculum 2014. They have a daily Phonics, English and Maths session in the mornings and then in the afternoons have topic work, Physical Education, Religious Education, Citizenship and Computing. Like the Reception children, they will be heard read at least three times a week either one to one with an adult or as part of a group guided reading session. We also frequently do paired reading. The children have a positive attitude to learning, work hard, ask questions and have the confidence to ask for help.
We are fortunate in Class One to be able to offer several different experts including a specialist music teacher and PE coaches. This has a huge benefit to the children’s enjoyment of school and their learning experience. They always look forward to and are very eager for the next session. Despite it not being on the National Curriculum, we are also able to offer the children a short weekly session of French. We feel this is very beneficial for their transition into Key Stage Two.
